I'm ready to make better use of my tiny fridge

How to have the foods you want for the meals you love

. . . even when it has been three weeks since you’ve seen a grocery store and you have a tiny refrigerator

From Carolyn Shearlock, founder of The Boat Galley and 12-year cruiser:

You thought that little refrigerator on your boat or RV was so cute. You dreamed of traveling to distant places and exploring new destinations, with enjoyable meals.

The problem? That #%@?! refrigerator only holds enough food for a couple of days. So you have to take one or two-day trips and at every stop, you go grocery shopping instead of spending your time doing the things you’ve dreamed of. Or you have to make meals from whatever shelf-stable ingredients you’ve loaded up on. Either way, reality is nowhere close to the dream.

Let’s face it, we want enjoyable meals, not just sustenance. But how can we have fresh produce, eggs, milk, butter, cheese and everything else we love when we have a refrigerator that’s only a fraction the size of the one we had when living ashore?

And the problem only gets worse when we realize that frequent trips to the grocery store aren't the answer, either. Grocery stores may not be convenient or even exist along our planned route. We need to be able to go longer between shopping trips than we did when living in a house, not shorter.

Oh, I get the frustration. Our first year cruising, I desperately wanted a larger refrigerator. We carefully considered what storage space we were willing to give up, precisely measured the space, and got a quote on building a new refrigerator. But to spend that much money for only that much more refrigerator space? No. There had to be a better way.

Shopping every few days wasn’t going to work. But neither was living off canned foods. And squeezing in as much as possible only led to bruised and rotting produce, broken eggs and never finding what I wanted for a meal.

Bit by bit, I honed my techniques for living with a tiny refrigerator until I could go three weeks or longer between trips to the grocery store -- and still have enjoyable meals made from real, delicious ingredients.

I had to learn it piecemeal, by trial and error. I would hear one bit of advice from one person and something different from someone else. Nothing put it all together.

It took ten years of cruising before I felt that I had the whole “living with a tiny refrigerator” thing down to a system.

I don’t want you to spend the next ten years figuring it out for yourself when I can tell you the exact methods I use in just a few hours.

No, you don’t need a larger refrigerator. You just need to use the one you have differently. And I can help you with that.

Hi! I’m Carolyn Shearlock. My husband and I have been cruising over 12 years and 11,000 miles, first on a Tayana 37 monohull and now on a 34’ Gemini catamaran. Along the way, we sold pretty much everything we owned (twice!), gained a great boat dog, had a bunch of wonderful times and some adventures . . . and learned a ton about what does and doesn’t work!

This course is an expanded version of one I teach at Cruisers University.

Imagine the change:

  • Tasty meals every day, no matter how long the trip or how far from stores.
  • Need a potluck dish? Feel like inviting new friends over? No problem, you’ll have plenty of food choices.
  • Spend time exploring the great places you visit instead of having to find the grocery store.
  • Special occasion? Know that you’ll be able to have a wonderful meal even in the most remote location.
  • Save money with less food waste and fewer meals out.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the course?

Most people find it takes two to three hours to go through the course materials initially, but many keep referring back to the information as they rearrange their food storage. You can implement the simplest items immediately and improve your food storage within just a few hours of purchase!

What if I have a top-loading refrigerator? A front-loading one? A portable (such as an Engle)?

The techniques and strategies presented in this course apply equally to any type of refrigerator.

I’m an RVer (or I live off the grid or in a tiny house). Is this for me?

Yes. The methods work anywhere, even in a large home!

I already bought Storing Food Without Refrigeration. How is this different?

This course builds on the material in Storing Food, with techniques and strategies to make the most of what refrigerator space you have. Since you already have Storing Food Without Refrigeration, you can purchase a special version of the course that doesn’t include the PDF and save a few bucks.

I was planning to get a portable refrigerator to increase my cold storage. Isn’t that a better solution?

A little more refrigerator space will surely be welcome, but the 40-quart Engel used by most boaters and RVers is only 1.33 cubic feet of additional space. Contrast this to the typical land-based home refrigerator of 18 to 20 cubic feet, add in that you’re going to go longer between grocery trips, and you can see how additional techniques are needed.

How is the course presented?

It’s written with plenty of photos to show exactly what I mean. You should already have a copy of my book, Storing Food Without Refrigeration.

The online portions of the course do require internet access. They are presented in a slideshow format with pictures and accompanying text, which requires far less bandwidth than video or even audio files.

Is everything available immediately?

Yes. Upon purchase, you’ll immediately be given login credentials and be able to login right from the purchase confirmation screen. You’ll have access to every bit of the course material and the first bonuses. You’ll also get an email with the login information and a few follow-ups with more bonuses.

How long do I have access?

Forever. Refer back to the materials as many times as you want.
